Companions of blind and partially sighted individuals will benefit from free train travel under a new pilot scheme introduced by ScotRail. From April 1, those holding an eye +1 national entitlement card will be eligible to bring a companion without incurring extra costs.

The year-long trial will apply across Scotland, with the aim of supporting more accessible transport for visually impaired people. Equalities Minister Kaukab Stewart launched the initiative at Anniesland station, Glasgow, praising the work that went into making this happen. Stewart highlighted that improving access to rail travel for people with sight loss will help them better connect to their communities, education, and employment opportunities.

Claire Dickie, ScotRail’s commercial director, emphasised the company’s commitment to inclusivity, stating that the trial is a positive step towards making travel easier for those requiring assistance. ScotRail hopes this scheme will lead to improved accessibility for all passengers.
