Ed Sheeran has revealed that marriage proposals have become a “trend” at his concerts, with as many as seven engagements taking place during a single performance. The 34-year-old singer, known for hits like Perfect and Thinking Out Loud, said fans often choose these songs as the perfect moment to pop the question. Speaking to Saltburn actor Richard E Grant, Sheeran reacted to claims that the so-called “Ed Sheeran effect” has led to a 400% rise in marriage proposals worldwide.

“There’s become a trend at my concerts where, in either Perfect or Thinking Out Loud, you just hear little cheers from around the stadiums, and it’s people getting engaged,” Sheeran explained. “There was one concert where there were about seven proposals. On the sixth or seventh, I was thinking, imagine being that bloke who’s planned it all out, and then five people propose before him – it kind of takes the wind out of the sails, and you’re like, ‘Might as well do it now.'” He added that the phenomenon has become a regular occurrence at his shows.
The singer made the comments during an appearance on Scott Mills’ BBC Radio 2 breakfast show, where he also introduced his new song, Azizam. Sheeran explained that the title means “my dear” in Farsi, a tribute to the Persian heritage of the song’s producer. “It means ‘my love’ or ‘my dear’ in Farsi, and the producer I made it with is Persian. It was something I’d never done before, and it was exciting and new,” he shared.

During the interview, Grant, who was promoting his comedy horror film Death Of A Unicorn, also asked Sheeran who he would like to portray him in a biopic. The Grammy-winning musician suggested Harry Potter star and fellow redhead Rupert Grint, who previously played him in the Lego House music video. “Probably Rupert Grint at this point, or maybe just go full Howard Stern (Private Parts) and do it myself,” he joked.
