In a heart-pounding encounter amidst the picturesque landscapes of Romania’s Carpathian Mountains, a Scottish tourist narrowly escaped a harrowing mauling by a wild bear. Moira Gallacher, 72, found herself in the claws of danger during a scenic drive with her friend, Charmian Widdowson.
The tranquility of their journey took an unexpected turn when they stumbled upon a couple of brown bears. Seeking to capture a memorable moment, Gallacher rolled down her window for a selfie attempt with one of the bears. What initially seemed like a friendly encounter soon escalated into a life-threatening situation.
Recalling the chilling ordeal, Gallacher recounted, “What happened was the bear came up to the window at my friend’s side and no problem. It let us take a picture and went away. But I didn’t get a proper picture, so we went back, and it was at my side.”
Before they could react, the bear lunged toward Gallacher, sinking its teeth into her arm. The swift and ferocious attack left Gallacher injured and shaken, requiring immediate medical attention.
Fortunately, Gallacher’s thick jacket proved to be her saving grace, offering a crucial layer of protection against the bear’s assault. Despite the terrifying ordeal, both women managed to maintain their composure and seek assistance promptly.
Reflecting on the incident, Widdowson emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “The bear came and wanted to get into the car, but he started getting into the car and bit my friend.”

The severity of the attack underscores the inherent dangers of interacting with wildlife, especially in their natural habitats. While Gallacher considers herself fortunate to have survived the encounter relatively unscathed, she acknowledges the sobering reality of the situation.
As Gallacher recuperates from her injuries, the incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of respecting nature’s boundaries and exercising caution in the presence of wild animals. In the serene beauty of the Carpathian Mountains, a momentary lapse in judgment nearly cost Gallacher dearly, serving as a stark warning against the allure of impulsive encounters with wildlife.
As travelers venture into the great outdoors in search of adventure and discovery, Gallacher’s brush with danger serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us to approach nature with reverence and mindfulness, lest we find ourselves at the mercy of its untamed inhabitants.
