Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture has announced an immediate nationwide lockdown of all poultry flocks in response to growing concerns over bird flu, according to an official statement released on Thursday.

The move expands upon measures introduced last week, which required poultry in designated high-risk areas to be kept indoors in an effort to curb the spread of the virus. The decision comes amid a surge in bird flu outbreaks across Europe, with 139 cases reported since July — 14 of which were detected in Spain, half occurring in the Castille and León region.

“The measure has been taken following an increased risk of the disease entering Spain in the last week,” the ministry said.

The order applies to all farms, including organic and small-scale producers, to minimise contact with migratory birds that could transmit the virus. It also prohibits keeping ducks and geese with other poultry, using untreated surface water, and organising bird fairs or exhibitions. Spanish authorities have urged vigilance among farmers and the public, stressing that the restrictions are temporary but essential to prevent a larger outbreak.
