Dark energy, the mysterious force believed to be responsible for the accelerated expansion of the universe, might be changing over time, according to new observations from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). DESI, situated at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, has collected data suggesting that dark energy may not be as constant as previously thought. If confirmed, this would shake up the current understanding of the universe and prompt a re-evaluation of the standard cosmological model.

The new data, released by the DESI collaboration, which includes 70 global institutions, shows potential signs that dark energy could be weakening. Arnaud de Mattia, a French physicist involved with the DESI research, acknowledged that while the standard model remains “satisfactory,” some tensions are emerging between what theory predicts and what is being observed. The research team combined their findings with other cosmological data, indicating that around seven billion years ago, the universe’s expansion may have been accelerating at a slightly higher rate than it is now.

Scientists have known for decades that the universe is expanding, with the discovery of its accelerating pace being a major breakthrough in the late 1990s. Dark energy, thought to make up around 70% of the universe, was attributed to this acceleration. However, the DESI team’s recent analysis hints that this energy may be evolving, leading researchers to speculate about what this means for our broader understanding of the universe.

Although the evidence is still tentative, experts believe we are at a key “inflection point” in understanding dark energy. Future surveys and instruments, including Europe’s Euclid space telescope and NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman space telescope, are expected to provide more data in the coming years. Etienne Burtin, a French physicist, expressed confidence that within five years, scientists will have a clearer picture of whether dark energy is indeed changing, which could lead to a scientific revolution comparable to the discovery of the universe’s accelerated expansion itself.
