Apple develops new AirPods feature for real-time translation

Date:

Apple is reportedly developing a new AirPods feature that will translate speech in real-time, according to a Bloomberg report. The technology, set to be integrated with iOS 19, would allow users to engage in face-to-face conversations with individuals speaking different languages, translating their speech through the AirPods. This update is expected to be part of one of Apple’s most significant iOS software overhauls in years, with a release anticipated later this year.

The feature would enable an English speaker, for example, to hear translated Spanish speech through their AirPods, while their responses would be translated back into Spanish via their iPhone’s speakers. Although live translation tech is not new – Google and Samsung have already introduced similar features with their earbuds – Apple aims to refine the experience for its users. Apple’s delay in adopting this technology could be seen as a response to the mixed reviews its competitors have received.

Unlike Samsung’s “Interpreter” tool and Google’s translation feature, Apple’s version hasn’t yet been associated with the “AI” buzzword, an area where the company has faced challenges. Recent attempts to integrate AI into Apple’s services, such as news headline summaries, have not been well-received, and AI upgrades for Siri have also been delayed. However, improvements to Apple’s translation technology are expected alongside iOS 19.

The unveiling of this new AirPods feature may coincide with the much-anticipated third-generation AirPods Pro at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June. Speculation suggests that these new earbuds will offer more seamless translation capabilities and possibly include additional features such as built-in cameras. As details remain limited, many are keen to see what Apple brings to this increasingly competitive market.
