The tragic discovery was made on March 13 when a concerned citizen reported the dolphin’s lifeless body washed up on Maes Beach in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. Promptly responding to the distress call, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) stranding network partner, Audubon Aquarium Rescue, retrieved the dolphin and transported it to the Audubon Nature Institute in New Orleans for a necropsy—a crucial step in determining the cause of death.
As investigations progressed, the grim truth emerged: the dolphin had suffered fatal gunshot wounds, with bullets found lodged in its brain, spinal cord, and heart.
