Sabrina Carpenter advocates for trans rights at MTV VMAs

Date:

Sabrina Carpenter took to the stage at the 2025 MTV VMAs to perform her latest single, Tears, using the moment to champion trans rights. Joined by trans performers and drag queens, Carpenter delivered a striking performance at the UBS Arena, featuring a dance break performed in simulated rain. Her background dancers held placards with slogans such as “In trans we trust,” “Support drag,” and “Protect trans rights,” making a vivid visual statement.

Later in the evening, Carpenter accepted the award for Best Album, thanking the performers on stage with her. “This world, as we all know, can be so full of criticism and discrimination and negativity,” she said. “So to get to be part of something that can bring light, make you smile, make you dance, and make you feel like the world is your oyster, I’m so grateful to do that.” Her remarks highlighted the role artists can play in bringing awareness and positivity to marginalised communities.

Carpenter joins a growing list of celebrities speaking out against discrimination. Figures such as Pedro Pascal, Lady Gaga, and Madonna have expressed support for the LGBTQIA+ community in recent months. Pascal, for instance, wore a “Protect the dolls” t-shirt at the Thunderbolts premiere in London in April, signalling solidarity with trans performers.

The trans community has faced particular challenges under the Trump administration, which has introduced policies that limit their rights in multiple areas, including military service. Carpenter’s public stance at a major awards show reinforces the ongoing conversation about equality and representation, using pop culture platforms to amplify voices that are often marginalised.
