Robert De Niro has publicly expressed his unwavering support for his daughter, Airyn, following her announcement that she is transgender. In an interview with online LGBT+ publication Them, Airyn spoke about embracing her identity and her pride in her Black heritage. De Niro, 81, said: “I loved and supported Aaron as my son, and now I love and support Airyn as my daughter. I don’t know what the big deal is… I love all my children.” Airyn expressed gratitude towards both her parents, including her mother, model Toukie Smith, for protecting her privacy during her upbringing.

She said her parents had agreed to keep her out of the public eye, allowing her to enjoy as normal a childhood as possible. This marks the first time Airyn has spoken publicly about her transition, sharing her journey of self-discovery and affirmation. Her comments highlight not only her personal transformation but also her connection to her cultural roots, adding that she is “more proud” of her Black heritage as she steps into this new chapter.

De Niro, known for roles in The Godfather Part II and Killers of the Flower Moon, became a father for the seventh time in 2023. His children include Drena and Raphael with his first wife Diahnne Abbott; twins Julian and Airyn with Toukie Smith; Elliot and Helen with ex-wife Grace Hightower; and his youngest daughter Gia with his current partner, Tiffany Chen. Throughout his career, De Niro has largely kept his family life private, though he has occasionally spoken about fatherhood with affection and pride.

Transgender rights continue to be a point of significant political and cultural discussion in both the UK and the United States. Recent weeks have seen demonstrations across Britain in response to a Supreme Court ruling related to the legal definition of a woman, reflecting the ongoing public discourse surrounding gender identity and equality. Airyn’s story adds a personal voice to a broader conversation, underscoring the importance of acceptance, family support, and the right to live authentically.
