Lesley Joseph has given a heartbreaking update on her Birds of a Feather co-star and lifelong friend, Pauline Quirke, who is living with dementia. Pauline, 65, was diagnosed with the condition in 2021, though the news was only made public earlier this year by her husband, Steve Sheen. Speaking to Bella magazine at the Variety Club Showbusiness Awards, Lesley, 80, said her dear friend is “not okay” and that she plans to visit her soon.

In January, Steve released a moving statement confirming Pauline’s diagnosis and explaining that she had stepped away from her professional commitments. He praised his wife’s extraordinary contribution to television, film, and education, describing her as “an inspiration” whose talent and generosity have touched countless lives. He added that her legacy continues through the Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts, which has helped thousands of young people gain confidence and pursue careers in the arts.
Pauline rose to fame alongside Linda Robson in the beloved sitcom Birds of a Feather, playing sisters Tracey and Sharon. The pair’s on-screen chemistry mirrored their real-life friendship, which began when they were just ten years old. Speaking on the Loose Women podcast, Linda recalled a touching moment when Pauline’s son Charlie rang to say his mum had asked, “Where’s my mate Linda Robson?”, a phrase that brought Linda to tears.

The two actresses shared many years of success, laughter, and friendship, both on and off screen. Linda reflected fondly on their early fame, recalling the excitement of being invited to glamorous events together when Birds of a Feather first became a hit. She described Pauline as “an amazing actress and my best friend”, adding that she remains deeply proud of all that Pauline achieved throughout her remarkable career.
