Michael Palin has led tributes to BAFTA-winning actor Lee Montague, following his passing at the age of 97. The news was confirmed by the Keats Community Library in north London, where Montague was a key figure in its preservation. Born Leonard Goldberg, Montague trained at the Old Vic Theatre School and built an impressive career spanning television, film, and stage. He starred in notable productions such as Bergerac, Bird of Prey, Casualty, and Jekyll and Hyde, while also becoming the first storyteller on the BBC children’s programme Jackanory, for which he won a BAFTA in 1961.

Beyond his television success, Montague left an indelible mark on British theatre and film. His stage career flourished at the Old Vic, the Bristol Old Vic, and the Royal Exchange in Manchester, where he took on celebrated roles in The Merchant of Venice, Measure for Measure, and The Birthday Party. He also made his mark on Broadway, starring in The Climate of Eden and the U.S. premiere of Entertaining Mr Sloane.
