The limb was discovered on Prestwick beach on 10 June, prompting an investigation by Police Scotland. Following forensic analysis, authorities established that the remains belonged to a person reported missing from outside of Scotland.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has since confirmed the identification of a man’s body, found last month in Millisle, County Down. It is understood that the two discoveries are connected.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 10.45am on Tuesday 10 June, we received a report that human remains had been discovered on Prestwick beach in Ayrshire.
The remains have now been identified as those of a missing person from outside of Scotland. The relevant police service has been informed.”
According to PSNI, the body discovered on Donaghadee Road in Millisle on 21 May has now been formally identified. Officers confirmed the remains were male and said they are currently engaging with the deceased’s family.
