Freddie Flintoff opens up about crash trauma in new Disney+ documentary

Date:

Freddie Flintoff is set to reflect on his harrowing Top Gear crash in a new 90-minute Disney+ documentary, Flintoff, premiering on 25 April. The former England cricketer, who suffered severe facial injuries and ongoing psychological trauma in the 2022 accident, has largely stayed out of the public eye since the incident. However, he recently made a quiet return with Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams On Tour, a follow-up to his earlier series that sees him and his cricket team journey to India.

The accident occurred during filming at Top Gear’s Surrey test track when Flintoff’s three-wheeled Morgan Super 3 flipped and skidded, leading to hospitalisation. Since then, the star has spoken candidly about the psychological aftermath, including flashbacks, nightmares, and intense anxiety. “I thought I could just shake it off,” he revealed, “but it’s not been a case of that. I had flashbacks. It’s been so hard to cope with.” Despite his challenges, Flintoff is slowly re-engaging with public life and cricket, acknowledging that he is “different” now, but still driven by his passion for the sport.

Following the crash, the BBC issued a formal apology and placed Top Gear on indefinite hiatus. Flintoff later reached a reported £9 million settlement with the broadcaster. He continues to receive strong support from his family, especially his wife Rachael and their children. His son Corey noted shortly after the crash that the family felt “lucky” he had survived, describing the event as “shocking”. Flintoff and Rachael, married since 2005, have long shared a strong bond that has helped him through his recovery.

Today, Flintoff is returning to both screens and cricket pitches. He has been appointed head coach of the Northern Superchargers men’s team in The Hundred, and says he is eager to give back to the sport that shaped him. “I’m relishing the opportunity to help guide the team to success on the field while making memories off it,” he said. The upcoming documentary promises a deeply personal insight into his recovery, his family life, and his unwavering connection to cricket.
