A Turkish couple has made headlines after opting to forgo the traditional wedding banquet in favour of feeding 4,000 Syrian refugees. Fethullah Üzümcüoğlu and Esra Polat, dressed in their wedding attire, spent their special day serving meals to those displaced by the Syrian conflict. The event took place in the southern Turkish city of Kilis, where many refugees have sought safety.

The couple chose to donate their wedding feast to families living in poverty, with the groom’s father, Ali Üzümcüoğlu, suggesting the idea. He believed that, given the proximity of those in need, a lavish meal for wedding guests was unnecessary. “I thought that sharing a big delicious dinner with our family and friends was unnecessary, knowing that there are so many people in need living next door,” Ali explained to i100. The bride, Esra, was initially taken aback by the proposal but quickly embraced the gesture. She said: “I was shocked when Fethullah first told me about the idea but afterwards I was won over by it. It was such a wonderful experience.”
