British duo smash world record with giant scotch egg

Date:

Two content creators from the UK have successfully broken the Guinness World Record for the largest Scotch egg, crafting a monstrous version of the classic British snack weighing over 7.8 kilograms—heavier than a bowling ball—and containing a staggering 24,000 calories. Oliver Paterson and Phoenix Ross, both in their late twenties, completed the feat on 17 June after a failed first attempt. Their creation surpassed the previous record of 6.2kg (13lb 10oz), which had stood for nearly two decades.

The enormous egg was made using a £25 ostrich egg sourced from Scotland, wrapped in 22lbs of sausage meat, coated in panko breadcrumbs, then deep-fried for 30 minutes before being baked for two hours. In accordance with Guinness rules, the yolk had to remain intact when sliced open—no small task, considering the size. The final cut was made using a sword to ensure precision without damaging the structure.

Oliver, from Enfield in North London, described achieving the record as a “lifelong dream.” The duo made several improvements following their first failed attempt, including preparing the meat the night before and even creating a back-up egg. Despite losing some weight during cooking, their final version comfortably exceeded the previous benchmark and met all official requirements.

To prevent food waste, as stipulated by Guinness, the pair transformed the leftover Scotch egg into 19 burritos, which they stored in their freezers. Oliver now has his sights set on more records, saying: “I’ve got Guinness on speed dial.” He hinted that his next challenge will be marathon-related, demonstrating his continued ambition in the world of record-breaking.
