Volodymyr Zelensky visited Washington, DC, on Monday 18 August for discussions with US President Donald Trump about ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Other world leaders, including Sir Keir Starmer, were also present. During the meeting, Mr Zelensky handed Mr Trump a letter from his wife, Olena Zelenska, Ukraine’s first lady. He clarified with a smile, “It’s not to you, it’s to your wife,” prompting laughter from both leaders.

The letter is a personal message intended for Melania Trump, highlighting the human cost of the war, particularly for children affected by the fighting. This exchange mirrors a previous instance in Alaska on 15 August, when Mr Trump delivered a letter from Melania to Vladimir Putin, emphasising the plight of children impacted by the conflict.
