Trump hints at unconstitutional fourth run amid global tour

Date:

During a visit to U.S. troops stationed in Qatar, President Donald Trump has once again hinted at the possibility of seeking a fourth presidential campaign—despite constitutional limits that strictly prohibit it. Speaking at Al Udeid Air Base in Doha, the 78-year-old president said, “Some people want us to do a fourth, I don’t know. Have to think about that,” in reference to running in 2028. Trump is currently on his first significant overseas trip since beginning his second term, visiting Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

Trump’s comments have reignited debate over the U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment, which clearly states that no individual may be elected president more than twice. Despite this, Trump has regularly suggested that allies are urging him to seek another term. Adding to the controversy, the president recently accepted a $400 million Boeing jet from the Qatari royal family—a gift that has drawn ethical scrutiny in Washington.

In multiple public appearances, including a prayer breakfast and Black History Month event, Trump appeared to entertain the idea further, basking in chants of “Four more years!” and suggesting he could find legal means to extend his time in office. He told NBC’s Kristen Welker that he was “not joking” about the notion, even referencing supposed strategies that might allow him to bypass term limits, although none were specified in detail.

Despite the president’s remarks being dismissed by some pundits as political theatre, they have prompted concern among constitutional scholars and lawmakers. Congressional Democrats have already introduced proposals aimed at reinforcing the two-term limit. While Trump insists he remains focused on his current administration, speculation continues to grow over whether the former reality TV star turned politician may once again attempt to push the boundaries of presidential power.
