TikTok misinformation about ADHD poses risks for young people, study warns

Date:

A new study has raised concerns over widespread misinformation about ADHD on TikTok, which is reportedly influencing young people’s understanding of the condition. Researchers found that less than half of the claims in the top 100 most viewed ADHD-related videos on the platform align with clinical guidelines for diagnosis.

The study, published in the journal PLOS One, also suggested that young adults who consume more TikTok content on ADHD are more likely to overestimate both the prevalence and severity of the symptoms. This could lead to misinterpretation and, in some cases, self-diagnosis without proper medical guidance. ADHD, characterised by symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, is often misunderstood on social media, where personal experiences shared by creators may not be universally applicable.

Researchers also highlighted that TikTok’s algorithm, designed to extend user engagement, could exacerbate the issue by repeatedly serving content that reinforces viewers’ pre-existing beliefs, a phenomenon known as the “echo chamber effect.” While social media can provide support for those seeking to understand their mental health, the study emphasised the importance of nuance, which is often missing in short, engaging videos.

Experts have advised young adults to verify social media information through reputable medical sources and consult healthcare professionals for a proper diagnosis. Dr Blandine French from the University of Nottingham echoed these concerns, reminding the public that social media should not be a primary source for medical diagnoses.
