REAL ID requirements for domestic flights in the US begin this week

Date:

Starting on Wednesday, new requirements for REAL ID will come into effect for domestic flights within the United States, following numerous delays spanning nearly two decades. The change has resulted in a surge of last-minute applications, with long queues forming at government offices across the country in the lead-up to the deadline.

In response to the increased demand, various measures have been implemented to accommodate applicants. Chicago has set up a dedicated “Real ID Supercenter” offering walk-in appointments, while states like California have extended office hours to manage the influx. Despite the rush, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem reassured those still without a REAL ID, stating that individuals flying on Wednesday without the necessary identification would still be allowed to travel after undergoing additional identity verification checks.

Although the new regulations aim to improve security, the process has not been without frustration. Many applicants have voiced concerns about the long waiting times. For example, Michael Aceto, who waited for over two and a half hours at a DMV in King of Prussia, Philadelphia, described the process as a “pain in the butt” and a “big waste of time”. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has advised travellers without a compliant ID to arrive early at airports to avoid delays and be prepared for advanced screening.

REAL ID is a federally compliant form of identification, which was recommended by the 9/11 Commission and signed into law in 2005. The new identification cards are considered more secure and are required for domestic flights, as well as access to certain federal buildings. With 81% of travellers already having a REAL ID, TSA security checkpoints will continue to accept passports and tribal identification as alternatives. However, those without the correct identification may face extra steps at security.
