Pressure mounts on Prince Andrew as Sarah Ferguson secures London home

Date:

Amid the ongoing fallout from the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, increasing calls are being made for Prince Andrew to vacate Royal Lodge in Windsor. The King’s brother has lived at the property since 2003 under a lease arranged by the Crown Estate. He continues to share the residence with his former wife, Sarah Ferguson, despite their divorce in 1996. While it remains uncertain where the Duke of York would live if required to leave, reports suggest that Sarah, aged 66, has already prepared an alternative.

The Duchess of York is said to have purchased a multi-million-pound property in Belgravia, London, in June 2022. According to the Daily Mail, the terraced house features Georgian-style sash windows and was previously divided into two flats before being converted into a single residence. The £4.25 million home, located near some of the capital’s most desirable spots, was reportedly bought outright with no mortgage. The deeds are understood to include a clause preventing the sale of the property without the consent of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, ensuring the house serves as a lasting investment for the family.

Although Sarah currently resides at Royal Lodge, she has publicly stated that she does not consider it her home. Speaking to The Telegraph, she explained: “When I’m in the UK, I’m lucky enough to stay at Royal Lodge. I wouldn’t call it my home as that would be presumptuous.” Her new Belgravia property could therefore serve as a sanctuary amid increasing scrutiny surrounding Prince Andrew’s position within the Royal Family.

Royal biographer Andrew Lownie, author of Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, told A Right Royal Podcast that Prince Andrew could only be persuaded to leave “voluntarily”. He suggested that pressure might come through the treatment of his daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. Beatrice divides her time between London’s St James’s Palace and her family home in the Cotswolds, while Eugenie splits her residence between Portugal, where her husband Jack Brooksbank works, and Kensington Palace’s Ivy Cottage. Both princesses continue to maintain close ties with their parents amid the uncertainty surrounding their father’s future.
