Police review Glastonbury performances following controversial on-stage remarks

Date:

Police are reviewing footage from Glastonbury Festival after performances by rap acts Bob Vylan and Kneecap sparked public and political concern. Bob Vylan, appearing on the West Holts Stage, led chants including “Free, free Palestine” and “Death, death to the IDF”, while Kneecap referenced a court date for one of its members by suggesting fans should “start a riot”, a comment that was later softened as a call for support.

In a statement, Avon and Somerset Police confirmed they were “assessing video evidence” to determine whether any offences may have taken place. The remarks came under further scrutiny after Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy reportedly contacted the BBC Director General seeking an explanation over the broadcaster’s vetting process. The Government welcomed the BBC’s decision not to re-air the Bob Vylan set on iPlayer, condemning the artist’s statements as threatening.

Kneecap, a Belfast-based trio known for its provocative political messaging, had already faced calls from MPs to be removed from the line-up. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said their appearance was “not appropriate”. During the set, member Naoise Ó Cairealláin responded directly, criticising the Prime Minister and praising the Eavis family — Glastonbury’s organisers — for standing by the group. Fellow member Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, facing a terrorism charge, performed while wearing a keffiyeh, and DJ Próvaí sported a “We are all Palestine Action” T-shirt.

The controversy continues amid heightened scrutiny of artists’ political expression at public events. Festivalgoers reportedly booed broadcast clips criticising Kneecap as the group took to the stage, reflecting both support and division over the political climate surrounding their appearance. The investigation now rests with local authorities as the cultural and legal implications unfold.
