Elon Musk has claimed that his social media platform, X, was the target of a “massive cyber attack” following a day of widespread outages. Tens of thousands of users reported disruptions to the platform, with the tracking site Downdetector.com documenting the issues. Musk, who acquired the platform, previously known as Twitter, in late 2022, took to the site on Monday to provide an update on the situation.

He stated, “There was (still is) a massive cyber attack against X,” adding that such attacks occur regularly but this particular one was “done with a lot of resources.” Musk suggested that either a large, coordinated group or even a nation might be behind the attack. The billionaire entrepreneur also responded to a user who suggested the attack was an attempt to silence both him and the platform, affirming, “Yes.”

The incident highlights ongoing challenges for X, which has faced a number of technical issues since Musk’s acquisition. The platform’s response to the cyber attack and the identities behind it are yet to be fully disclosed.
