MasterChef presenter John Torode addresses racism allegation amid review into Gregg Wallace’s conduct

Date:

MasterChef presenter John Torode has confirmed he is the subject of an upheld allegation regarding the use of racist language, revealed during an independent review into co-presenter Gregg Wallace’s behaviour. The report, commissioned by production company Banijay UK and led by law firm Lewis Silkin, found that 45 of 83 allegations against Wallace were substantiated, alongside two separate allegations involving other individuals, including one concerning racist language. Torode, in an Instagram statement, expressed shock and sadness at the claim, stating he has no recollection of the incident but acknowledged that any racial language is wholly unacceptable.

The investigation also confirmed allegations of inappropriate conduct by Wallace, including unwelcome physical contact. Wallace apologised for any distress caused, asserting he never intended to harm or humiliate. The report noted most allegations against Wallace related to incidents between 2005 and 2018, predominantly concerning inappropriate sexual language and humour. During the investigation, Wallace was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, which he said helped him understand how his behaviour and communication might have been misinterpreted.

Banijay UK announced that Wallace would step away from MasterChef during the investigation and later declared his return “untenable” given the findings. The BBC also stated that it has no plans to work with Wallace in the future, emphasising that his behaviour falls below the corporation’s standards. Both organisations accepted that earlier action should have been taken to address the issues raised, highlighting missed opportunities to protect staff and maintain a safe working environment.

The future of a series of MasterChef episodes filmed last year remains uncertain, with the BBC yet to decide on whether to broadcast them. This comes after a BBC News investigation last year exposed multiple allegations of inappropriate behaviour against Wallace over nearly two decades. Wallace has denied engaging in sexually harassing behaviour, but the report and ensuing actions signal a significant reckoning for the show and those involved.
