Mark Carney set to take over as Canada’s prime minister following leadership victory

Date:

Mark Carney, Canada’s incoming Prime Minister, is set to take over from Justin Trudeau following his overwhelming victory in the Liberal Party’s leadership race. Carney, 59, won 86 per cent of the vote from over 150,000 participants, and announced that the transition will be “seamless” and “quick.” He met with Trudeau and the Liberal caucus in Ottawa on Monday to discuss key national issues, including Canada-US relations, though he refrained from commenting on President Donald Trump’s threats against Canada.

In his victory speech, Carney adopted a defiant tone towards the United States, stating, “The Americans, they should make no mistake, in trade as in hockey, Canada will win.” Carney also expressed that Canada was always prepared to stand up for itself when faced with challenges. However, despite the leadership win, the transition’s timing remains uncertain, with sources suggesting Carney could assume office by the end of the week.

Although Carney’s tenure as Prime Minister is set to begin soon, his leadership may be short-lived, with Canada required to hold federal elections by October. Public opinion polls currently place the opposition Conservatives as slight favourites. The upcoming election will be a major test for Carney, who, despite his background as a former governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England, has never held an elected public office.
