A 25-year-old man has been arrested at Manchester Airport, nearly two weeks after an elderly woman was stabbed in her front garden in Middleton, Greater Manchester. The victim, a woman in her 70s, was attacked in what police describe as an “unprovoked” incident while she was gardening outside her home on Crow Hill South, Alkrington, at approximately 11:20am on 6th March.

The attack sparked fear among local residents, with armed police responding swiftly and a nearby primary school placed on lockdown. The victim, who was stabbed in the neck by an unknown assailant, was left traumatised, while the offender fled the scene. Greater Manchester Police launched a thorough investigation, including house-to-house inquiries and CCTV reviews, in an effort to identify and locate the suspect.
On Tuesday, 18th March, police confirmed that a 25-year-old man had been arrested upon landing at Manchester Airport. He was taken into custody on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm (GBH). Officers are continuing to appeal for any dashcam footage that may assist with the investigation, especially footage showing the suspect’s movements before and after the assault.

Detective Inspector Kimberley Hines of GMP’s Rochdale district commented, “We believe this to be an unprovoked attack which has left the victim understandably shaken. We hope the news of this arrest provides some reassurance to the community. We urge anyone with information or footage from the day to come forward, as it may be crucial to our investigation.”
