President Emmanuel Macron is set to lay out his vision for the final stretch of his presidency during a two-hour televised interview on Tuesday evening. The special broadcast, Emmanuel Macron – the Challenges for France, will air on TF1 and feature union leaders who are expected to question the president on his record. Macron will also respond to questions submitted by members of the public, in an effort to appear more in touch with everyday concerns.

According to TF1, the president will be surrounded by more than 100 square metres of screens and will be addressed by various civil society figures, both in person and via video link. The format is designed to present Macron as accessible and responsive to public sentiment, at a time when his domestic standing has significantly weakened. He came to power in 2017 on a platform of radical reform, but his political momentum has waned in recent years.
Macron’s decision to call snap legislative elections last summer proved damaging. His Renaissance party lost ground, leaving the far-right National Rally (RN) as the largest force in the National Assembly. Efforts to regain control faltered again in late 2024, when the appointment of Michel Barnier as prime minister failed to shore up support. In December, Barnier’s government was ousted following a vote by French lawmakers.

Amid speculation, Macron may use the interview to propose a national referendum on issues including assisted dying, youth screen time, immigration, and budgetary policy. However, political opponents have questioned the usefulness of the television appearance, with some viewing it as a media exercise rather than a meaningful policy intervention.
