Lammy urges immediate humanitarian aid for Gaza amid “man-made famine”

Date:

Foreign Secretary David Lammy has expressed his outrage over Israel’s refusal to allow sufficient aid into Gaza, announcing an additional £15 million for medical support in the region. Speaking in the House of Commons on Monday, he described the situation in Gaza as a “man-made famine,” echoing the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Classification (IPC).

He called for an urgent and comprehensive humanitarian response to prevent further deaths, insisting that NGOs, health workers, and aid stockpiles must be allowed access. Mr Lammy confirmed that the extra funding would go to UK-Med and the World Health Organisation in Egypt to support medical operations, highlighting that UK-Med field hospitals have already treated over 600,000 Gazans.

The Foreign Secretary also reiterated the Government’s commitment to bring critically ill and injured Gazan children to the UK for specialist NHS treatment, noting that the process depends on Israeli permissions. He emphasised the complexity and dangers involved in extracting people from an active war zone and promised to press the Israeli government to expedite approvals.

Mr Lammy condemned ongoing illegal settlement construction in the West Bank, particularly in the E1 area east of Jerusalem, warning that it threatens the contiguous Palestinian state. He stressed that the UK’s support for Israeli security does not contradict its commitment to a two-state solution. On Iran, he confirmed that sanctions would be reintroduced due to the country’s failure to comply with legal obligations, while underlining that diplomatic negotiations remain possible.
