Kate Cassidy, the girlfriend of the late singer Liam Payne, has spoken publicly for the first time about their final moments together, describing them as “chilling” yet “beautiful”. Payne, formerly of One Direction, died at the age of 32 after falling from a third-floor balcony of a hotel in Argentina on 16 October last year. Cassidy, who had been staying with him at the time, had returned to the United States shortly before the incident.

In an emotional interview on the Jay Shetty podcast, Cassidy recounted their last conversation: “I was going on and on about how much I love him,” she said. “He laughed and told me, ‘Kate, you’re going to miss your flight, your car is in the driveway, you’re acting like this is the last time you’re ever going to see me again.’” Reflecting on that moment, she added: “To really know that was the last time I’d ever see him again is just so chilling. But I’m grateful our goodbye was so heartfelt. That’s where I find peace.”
Cassidy admitted that coping with his sudden death had been extremely difficult, especially as the couple had made plans for their future. “I was supposed to be trying on my wedding dress, not wearing a black one,” she said. She also revealed Payne had left her a note expressing his intentions to propose. Cassidy attended his private funeral in Buckinghamshire, alongside Payne’s family and former One Direction bandmates.

In February, a court in Argentina dropped charges of criminal negligence against three of the five individuals initially investigated in connection with the incident. At the Brit Awards in March, Payne was honoured in a tribute montage featuring moments with his family, his time on The X Factor, and his career with One Direction, the group that won seven Brit Awards before parting ways.
