James May praised by fans for down-to-earth encounters

Date:

James May, known for his long-standing role on Top Gear and The Grand Tour, is gaining attention off-screen for his unassuming and approachable demeanour. Fans, extras, and former colleagues have taken to Reddit to share first-hand experiences of meeting the 62-year-old presenter—many describing him as genuine, witty, and warmly reserved.

One contributor, who appeared as an extra during the filming of The Grand Tour in California, noted that May was more interested in aircraft than socialising—but remarked that it seemed fitting. Others recalled humorous or touching encounters, including one fan who had a bottle of May’s own gin signed during an unexpected meeting at his local pub, calling him a “legend”. Another described a pleasant exchange with him during Top Gear Live, while someone who advised on the Vietnam special said May and co-host Richard Hammond were “great fun”.

The post sparked a wave of appreciation for May’s authenticity, with several noting that he and Jeremy Clarkson appeared “incredibly thankful” when engaging with audiences at live events. Despite the global fame the trio achieved, many fans felt their interactions were refreshingly humble and sincere.

Following the end of The Grand Tour last year, May reflected on the decision to step back, saying it was time for a “new generation” to take over the genre. Speaking on Sunday Brunch, he emphasised the importance of leaving audiences wanting more—a sentiment that now appears to extend to both his on- and off-screen presence.
