Jaguar Land Rover production hit by cyber attack

Date:

Production at Jaguar Land Rover has been severely disrupted after a cyber attack forced the company to shut down its systems. The British car maker said it is working “at pace” to restart production globally in a controlled manner. Retail operations have also been affected, though there is currently no evidence that customer data has been compromised.

Tim Grieveson, chief information security officer at ThingsRecon, told Sky News that modern car manufacturing relies on a complex web of tier-1 and tier-2 suppliers, each carrying its own risks. He added that every hour of downtime in the automotive sector could cost more than £1.6 million, with halted production reducing vehicle availability and impacting dealer revenue immediately.

Jaguar Land Rover is the latest UK company to experience a cyber incident, following attacks on other major firms such as Marks & Spencer, which only resumed click-and-collect services last month after a significant Easter weekend disruption. Cybersecurity threats are becoming increasingly common across industries, affecting both production and customer-facing operations.

Expert Harjinder Lallie told Sky News that the rise in attacks is partly due to the emergence of “ransomware-as-a-service”, allowing less technically skilled individuals to conduct attacks using sophisticated tools in exchange for a share of the profits. This business model has made cybercrime more accessible and lucrative, contributing to the surge in incidents worldwide.
