Former conservative MP accused of possessing false Passport

Date:

A former Conservative Member of Parliament has appeared in court, facing a charge of possessing a false passport. Katie Wallis, 41, who made history in 2022 as the first openly transgender MP in the House of Commons, represented herself during a hearing at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on Monday. Wallis, formerly known as Jamie, served as the MP for Bridgend from 2019 until earlier this year.

The charge relates to an incident in April 2022, during her time in office, when she was allegedly in possession of a false passport without a reasonable excuse. The court heard the accusation in full before District Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke, the Recorder of Cardiff, who presided over the session.

The judge adjourned the case to allow Wallis time to consider seeking legal representation, stating: “I’m going to adjourn this for a short period of time to enable you to decide whether you want to get at least some initial advice.” Wallis, dressed in a pink jacket, did not enter a plea during the hearing.

She was granted bail and is scheduled to return to court for the next hearing on 15 August. No further details regarding the nature of the passport or how it was allegedly obtained were discussed in open court.
