Europe seeks ceasefire amid escalating Iran-Israel conflict

Date:

The conflict between Iran and Israel has now entered its second week, with Israel warning of a “prolonged war” as hostilities escalate on both sides. Israeli air strikes targeted Tehran and other areas, reportedly killing several Iranian commanders and destroying missile infrastructure. In response, Iran launched a rare afternoon barrage of ballistic missiles, with one striking the port city of Haifa and injuring dozens. Other missiles hit Beersheba, although with fewer consequences. The Israeli military chief, Lt Gen Eyal Zamir, stated that Israel must prepare for “difficult days” and a sustained campaign.

At the United Nations in Geneva, Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, affirmed Tehran’s resolve to defend its sovereignty “with all force”, while European diplomats pushed for renewed nuclear talks to avoid further escalation. António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, warned that unchecked conflict could lead to a regional catastrophe. Meanwhile, the UK withdrew embassy staff from Iran as a precaution, and David Lammy, the Foreign Secretary, said efforts were underway to repatriate British citizens from Israel once air travel resumed.

On the ground, the humanitarian toll is mounting. Iranian media report that over 600 Iranians have died from Israeli airstrikes, while Iranian missiles have killed at least 25 people in Israel. Iran has threatened to retaliate against US bases in the region should the United States join the fighting. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz issued a stern warning to Hezbollah, cautioning them against intervention and ordering intensified strikes on Iranian targets, including the Revolutionary Guard Corps and nuclear-related facilities.

Despite public statements of solidarity from Iranian-backed militias, there has been no direct military involvement thus far. European powers, concerned about regional destabilisation, are urging restraint and renewed diplomacy. Talks in Geneva included a renewed push for US-Iran negotiations, though Iran remains unwilling to engage until Israel halts its strikes. As the US weighs military involvement, questions remain over the feasibility of targeting Iran’s fortified Fordow nuclear facility. European nations continue to press for a ceasefire and a diplomatic resolution to prevent further destruction.
