Cyber security experts have urged smartphone users to immediately uninstall a fake VPN and piracy app that can drain online bank accounts. According to a new report from fraud detection firm Cleafy, over 3,000 Android devices across Europe have already been infected by the malware. The malicious software disguises itself as a free streaming and VPN service called Mobdro Pro IP TV + VPN, offering access to films, television shows, and live sports, while secretly attempting to seize full control of users’ devices.

Researchers discovered that the malware, named Klopatra, uses a convincing interface to trick users into granting system permissions. After installation, the app prompts users to “continue with the installation”, which redirects them to Android’s settings and requests access through Accessibility Services. This permission, designed to help people with disabilities, gives the malicious software the ability to read screen content and perform actions as if it were the user, enabling cyber criminals to gain full remote control.
Cleafy’s investigation suggests that the malware likely originates from Turkey, with a Turkish-speaking group believed to be responsible for its development and management. The fraud detection firm estimates that around 1,000 people have already fallen victim to the scam, resulting in stolen data and emptied bank accounts. Researchers warn that the operation’s apparent success could inspire copycat attacks by other cyber crime groups, further complicating detection and response efforts.
