Democratic Senator Cory Booker has made history by delivering the longest speech ever recorded in the US Senate, surpassing 24 hours without taking a break. The senator from New Jersey began speaking at 7pm local time on Monday (midnight UK time) in a marathon protest against former president Donald Trump’s policies. Despite his exhaustion, Booker, 55, has vowed to continue speaking for as long as he is “physically able.” His speech has focused on what he describes as “grave and urgent” threats to American democracy.

Booker’s speech has now exceeded the previous record of 24 hours and 18 minutes, which was held by the late Senator Strom Thurmond, who filibustered against the Civil Rights Act of 1957. However, Booker’s address is not considered a filibuster, as it is not delaying a vote on any bill. Meanwhile, controversy arose when one of his aides, Kevin Batts, was arrested for carrying an unauthorised firearm on the grounds of the US Capitol. Batts, a retired Newark police detective, was reportedly led past security by a member of Congress, though officials have not confirmed their identity.
Addressing the Senate, Booker declared: “These are not normal times in our nation. The threats to the American people and American democracy are grave and urgent, and we all must do more to stand against them.” Despite signs of fatigue, he remains determined, with Democratic colleagues stepping in at intervals to provide him with brief respites. At one point, Booker remarked: “Thirteen hours? I’ve got more in the tank.” By 8am, he assured the chamber, “I’m rip-roaring and ready. I’m wide awake. I’m going to stand here for as many hours as I can.”

The senator has yet to leave the floor for rest, food, or even a trip to the lavatory—any of which would allow the presiding officer to move on to other matters. His endurance has drawn widespread attention, with supporters praising his commitment and critics questioning the effectiveness of such a prolonged protest. Whether he continues for much longer or not, Booker has already secured his place in the Senate’s history books.
