Sally Lindsay and Neil Morrissey’s divisive thriller Love Rat has recently been added to Netflix. The four-part drama originally aired on Channel 5 last year but is now available on the streaming platform. Lindsay, known for her role in Coronation Street, and Morrissey, famed for Waterloo Road, portray ex-partners Emma and Pete, whose turbulent past continues to affect their lives.

Emma appears to have moved on, finding new love with Greek hotel owner Niko. However, it soon emerges that Niko is a conman exploiting her vulnerability. The series has received mixed reactions from viewers. Some have criticised its plot and characterisation as implausible, even describing parts as unintentionally humorous due to the low quality of the production.
On the other hand, many have found it to be an enjoyable, light watch. The review from iNews praised Lindsay and Gerald Kyd’s performances, noting that Lindsay convincingly portrays a woman grappling with mid-life loneliness. Kyd’s depiction of Niko combines charm with a subtle, persistent sense of unease, avoiding overt sleaziness while clearly suggesting a conman’s duplicity.

Lindsay has maintained a strong working relationship with Channel 5—now rebranded simply as 5—with the fourth series of The Madame Blanc Mysteries premiering earlier this year. Ahead of its return, she remarked that the show’s appeal lies in its realistic portrayal of middle-aged couples who choose not to have children: “You don’t want to move in with each other… just want to take it easy.”
