The Last of Us has officially been renewed for a third season, just days before the highly awaited second season is set to air. The hit HBO drama, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, will return to UK screens on Sunday, 13 April. The show is based on the acclaimed action-adventure video game and originally premiered in the UK in January 2023.

Season two, co-created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, is set five years after the events of the first season, which followed Joel (Pascal) and Ellie (Ramsey) as they journeyed across a post-apocalyptic United States amid a deadly fungal outbreak. Speaking about the new season, Mazin remarked: “We approached season two with the goal of creating something we could be proud of. The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals, thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew.”
The series has earned widespread critical acclaim, winning eight Emmys at the 75th awards ceremony, including Outstanding Special Visual Effects and Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup. While Pascal and Ramsey were nominated for lead acting awards, they ultimately lost out to Succession’s Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook. Still, the programme’s success has solidified its status as one of HBO’s standout productions.

Co-creator Druckmann expressed his excitement for the future, saying: “To see The Last of Us brought to life so beautifully and faithfully has been a career highlight. We’re thrilled to bring you more in season three.”
