Sydney Sweeney to star in film adaptation of acclaimed game Split Fiction

Date:

Sydney Sweeney has secured the leading role in the forthcoming film adaptation of Split Fiction, one of 2025’s most critically acclaimed video games. Just weeks after the game’s March release, it was confirmed that a film deal was being packaged and shopped around to major studios, sparking a competitive bidding process.

Although no studio has yet been finalised, Sweeney has officially joined the project, with both a director and scriptwriters also attached. The storyline centres around two young authors — science fiction writer Mio and fantasy novelist Zoe — who find themselves trapped inside the worlds they’ve created. Forced to collaborate, the pair must navigate through a variety of fictional landscapes in a bid to return home.

Sweeney is set to portray one of the two writers, although it remains undecided which character she will take on, according to Variety. She will also serve as an executive producer on the film. The project will be directed by Wicked’s Jon M Chu, while Deadpool & Wolverine writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have been confirmed to write the screenplay.

Interestingly, Split Fiction is the second game by the developer to receive a film treatment. Their previous title, It Takes Two, is also being adapted, with Amazon and Dwayne Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions behind that effort. With a Metacritic score of 91, Split Fiction currently stands as the third highest-rated game of the year. In its review, Digital Spy praised the title’s creativity and the engaging challenges it presents throughout its unique narrative.
