Ryan Reynolds celebrates nature’s unsung heroes in new Nat Geo series

Date:

After making headlines in Hollywood and co-owning Wrexham football club, Ryan Reynolds is heading into the wild with a fresh project. The Canadian actor will narrate a new five-part documentary series from National Geographic titled Underdogs. This series aims to shine a light on the often-overlooked creatures of the natural world, highlighting their fascinating behaviours and quirky survival strategies.

Underdogs promises to “celebrate the unique behaviours of the animals who don’t usually get to be the stars of the show.” Each episode explores a different theme — from peculiar mating rituals and surprising superpowers to deception, questionable parenting and rather unpleasant habits. In the trailer, Reynolds sets the tone with his trademark wit, stating he’ll “get down in the mud with nature’s benchwarmers. Not the superheroes, the super zeros.”

In addition to Reynolds’ narration, the show features an original theme song, ‘Underdog’, specially written and recorded by Green Day. Speaking about the project, Reynolds said: “Working with National Geographic on Underdogs was a dream come true — mostly because I can finally watch one of our projects with my children. Technically, they saw Deadpool & Wolverine, but I doubt they absorbed much while covering their eyes and ears for two hours.”

Reynolds recently appeared on the big screen in the R-rated Deadpool & Wolverine and is reportedly developing ideas for a new ensemble film featuring several X-Men characters. However, Deadpool is expected to take more of a backseat role in this upcoming project. Underdogs premieres on Nat Geo Wild at 9:00pm on 18 June and will be available to stream on Disney+ from 16 June.
