The film had originally been set to star Joaquin Phoenix, but production was abruptly shut down last year when the Oscar-winner withdrew just days before cameras were due to roll. Phoenix’s sudden departure left the project in limbo, despite significant preparation already having taken place. Entire sets had been constructed in Guadalajara, Mexico, where filming was due to begin.
Phoenix was said to have stepped away from the project owing to doubts, with reports suggesting he experienced “cold feet” despite months of development work. The actor had been closely involved in shaping the screenplay alongside Haynes and writer Jon Raymond, which heightened speculation about the circumstances of his decision.

If Pascal signs on, filming is expected to resume in the New Year in Guadalajara. He would join Danny Ramirez, who remains attached to the production. De Noche has been described as a 1930s-set romance centred on two men who leave Los Angeles for Mexico, a premise that has generated considerable interest within the film community.
