Olivia Dean finds creative spark in Carrie Bradshaw and therapy

Date:

British singer Olivia Dean has revealed that Sex and the City’s iconic character Carrie Bradshaw inspired her upcoming album The Art of Loving. The 26-year-old singer shared that watching the series from the beginning deeply influenced her new work, adding, “I’ve been living my Carrie moment – her influence will be there.” One track, Something In Between, delves into the complicated emotions of being caught in the grey area between romance and break-up.

Dean, who released her debut album Messy in 2023, has been open about drawing inspiration from both her personal life and unexpected moments. She explained that Messy explored the vulnerability of learning to love again following heartbreak, describing it as “a messy road” that left her heart feeling “quite hardened.” The album also included Ladies Room, a single born from an amusing conversation she overheard in a nightclub toilet queue.

She recalled: “This lady was saying, ‘Girls, if I could give you any advice, never go out with a man who’s 20 years your senior.’ I recorded her because I thought it was hilarious. The song originally had her voice at the beginning, but it’s illegal to record people. I don’t know how to find her – wherever you are, you’re my inspiration!” The anecdote reflects Dean’s ability to find creative sparks in everyday encounters.

In addition to her musical evolution, Dean has been candid about the benefits of therapy. She admitted to previously struggling with self-criticism and comparison, which led to a period of low mental wellbeing. “It was honestly quite a depressive state,” she said. “I’ve been doing therapy and learning how I function and what kind of environment I thrive in. Therapy is awesome.” Her openness sheds light on the importance of mental health support in artistic growth.
