Nelly Furtado steps back from performing

Nelly Furtado has announced she is stepping away from live performance “for the foreseeable future”, as she looks ahead to the next phase of her life. Marking the 25th anniversary of her debut album Woah, Nelly!, the singer explained that she intends to focus on other creative and personal pursuits. While taking a step back from the stage, she emphasised that songwriting remains a passion she will “identify with forever”.

The I’m Like a Bird star reflected on the renewed interest in her music, driven largely by TikTok. She described the experience as both “surreal and joyful”, adding that returning to performing this year had reminded her of the “lasting power of good music”. Her most recent live appearance took place at Munich’s SUPERBLOOM Festival in August.

Furtado expressed gratitude to fans and collaborators who have supported her career, celebrating the “fun, community and wonder” she has experienced as a pop artist. She thanked those who attended her shows and “vibrated” with her music over the years, as well as the creative teams who helped make her ambitions a reality.

The Canadian singer shared a throwback image from the beginning of her career, alongside a recent clip from her performance in Berlin. She signed off her announcement with a heartfelt message: “Thank you and goodnight! Nelly.”
