Morgan Freeman reflects on ageing and the value of staying active

Date:

Morgan Freeman has said he has no fear of getting older. The 88-year-old actor explained that his approach to longevity comes from his long-time friend and fellow Unforgiven star Clint Eastwood, now 95. Speaking to AARP’s Movies for Grownups, Freeman said he identifies strongly with Eastwood’s mantra about old age: “Keep moving.” He added that the director’s advice — “don’t let the old man in” — has become central to how he lives.

Professionally, Freeman has remained active, returning for the third instalment of the Now You See Me franchise. He reprises his role as former magician Thaddeus Bradley in Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, which is released on 14 November. Away from the set, the Oscar-winner said he spends much of his free time watching the comedy-drama The Righteous Gemstones and playing golf every day. Approaching 90, he joked that his biggest concern is not the ageing process but the state of his golf swing.

Freeman has also been seen in public with Eastwood, including during a recent trip to California. The pair reunited in September at the Monterey Jazz Festival, where Freeman presented Eastwood with the inaugural Clint Eastwood Award for Cultural Leadership. On 14 October, Freeman shared a photograph from the event with his producing partner, Lori McCreary, writing that it had been a “great pleasure” to honour his friend and enjoy performances by Kyle Eastwood and Mavis Staples.

Despite a career spanning six decades, Freeman said he has managed to remain grounded. He told AARP that winning an Oscar “didn’t change him one whit”, aside from raising his fee and improving job opportunities. Offering advice to emerging performers, he cautioned them against inflating their egos, urging them instead to “stay in your lane” and focus on understanding their strengths.
