Mariah Carey has claimed that ageing “just doesn’t happen” in her world, saying she refuses to acknowledge the passage of time. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, the 56-year-old singer shared that her attitude toward ageing has inspired lyrics on her forthcoming 16th studio album, Here For It All. “I don’t allow it – it just doesn’t happen,” she said. “I don’t know time. I don’t know numbers. I do not acknowledge time – I have a new song that starts with that line.”

Carey reflected on the emotional process of writing her 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey, co-authored with journalist Michaela Angela Davis. “Working on it together was challenging, but it was also therapeutic,” she explained. “We stayed up late figuring out how to tell the story. It brought up painful memories I didn’t want to relive, and at times it left me shaken – this is my life, and I lived through it.”
Despite the heavy subject matter of her memoir, Carey said she aimed for a lighter touch with her new album’s lead single, Type Dangerous, which she described as “tongue in cheek”. The track reflects her enduring sense of humour and desire to bring levity to her music, even as she continues to explore deeply personal themes.

The singer also spoke about her mother’s early influence, recalling words that motivated her as a child. “We didn’t always have the world’s greatest relationship,” she admitted, “but certain things stuck. She once told me, ‘Don’t say if I make it, say when I make it’ – and I never gave up.” With three UK number one singles and two chart-topping albums, Carey’s legacy is firmly secured – not least for her perennial Christmas anthem, All I Want For Christmas Is You.
