Gary Barlow’s antipodean adventure: a taste of Australia with a british twist

Date:

When Take That first toured Australia in the mid-1990s, the boyband were understandably overwhelmed by the journey. Three decades on, while the distance remains the same, Gary Barlow now feels more connected to the destination than ever. “You don’t realise how much of a travel corridor Australia has become for us Brits,” says Barlow, who fronts the new series Gary Barlow’s Food and Wine Tour: Australia, airing from today in six episodes until 27 June. “We love going there.”

Joined by a host of well-known faces – including Andi Peters, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Ronan Keating and Dannii Minogue – the 54-year-old singer explores the rich food and wine culture across six Australian states and territories, all set against jaw-dropping natural backdrops. Currently rehearsing for his Songbook tour across the UK, Barlow reflects on the sheer beauty of the country: “The geography there is absolutely astounding… so inspiring.” Travelling was made even more special by the presence of his daughter, Emily, who is studying in Australia. The pair spent quality time together in Queensland during filming.

Barlow is eager to showcase not just the landscapes, but also the warm, welcoming people he encountered. “The people you meet are as important as the places,” he says. One of his favourite discoveries was Margaret River, now among his top wine regions in the world. “I absolutely loved it and didn’t see enough of it. I’m desperate to go back,” he admits. From rainforest walks and snorkelling in the Daintree to swimming with wild dolphins off Kangaroo Island, the trip was a medley of meaningful moments and breathtaking experiences.

The adventure continued with Ronan Keating as the pair explored Northern Territory culture, sampled local coffee in Melbourne’s ACDC Lane, and marvelled at the Sunrise Journeys light show above Uluru. “We couldn’t believe how much we managed to pack in,” says Barlow. November’s bright, clear skies proved perfect for the journey. For those inspired to follow in his footsteps, Hays Travel and Wexas Travel offer curated Australian packages to destinations featured in the show – from wine safaris to wildlife encounters.
