Dermot Mulroney hints at sequel to ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’

Date:

Dermot Mulroney has confirmed that there are ongoing discussions about a sequel to My Best Friend’s Wedding, the 1997 romantic comedy that starred Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, and Rupert Everett. Speaking to the New York Post, the actor revealed: “Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote.” The original film, now approaching its 30th anniversary, remains one of the most cherished rom-coms of the 1990s.

Mulroney reminisced about the experience of working on the film, describing it as a “dream”. He recalled the competitive audition process, queuing with other hopefuls for the chance to star opposite Roberts. “I knew — and all of Hollywood knew — it was going to be an exceptional movie,” he shared, reflecting on the instant sense that the film would become a classic.

The original storyline followed childhood friends Julianne and Michael, played by Roberts and Mulroney, who promised to marry each other if still single by age 28. When Michael announces his engagement to Kimberly, played by Diaz, Julianne is forced to confront her own feelings — leading to a series of romantic misadventures. The film struck a chord with audiences for its bittersweet take on love and timing.

Julia Roberts herself hinted at interest in a continuation of the story during a 2023 appearance on Watch What Happens Live, naming My Best Friend’s Wedding as the film from her past she would most like to revisit. She expressed curiosity about the lives of the characters years later, particularly the marriage between Kimmy and Michael. Meanwhile, Cameron Diaz has returned to acting after more than a decade, starring in Netflix’s Back in Action.
