Dax Shepard has shared that he allows his children to swear under certain circumstances, provided it’s done appropriately and within the family home. The 50-year-old actor, who shares two daughters – Lincoln, 12, and Delta, ten – with actress Kristen Bell, explained on his Armchair Expert podcast that he sees no issue with swearing when it is “called for” and done in context. “I fully swear in front of my kids,” he said. “They are allowed to swear, not with impunity, but when it’s called for, and they land it, and it’s in the house and not out at a restaurant, it’s OK.”

Shepard further defended his relaxed stance, suggesting that words are merely sounds given meaning by the speaker. “These are noises that come out of your mouth, and you assign what they mean to you,” he told his daughters. He also acknowledged that they’re likely to hear swearing at school anyway and advised them simply not to use such language in front of teachers.
Kristen Bell, meanwhile, has taken a slightly different approach, emphasising the importance of setting a positive example through her and Shepard’s behaviour. Speaking previously to People magazine, Bell explained that the couple prioritise resolving disagreements openly in front of their daughters. “We always make up in front of them if anyone gets snarky or frustrated or fights, which we all do,” she said. “Even if it’s the next morning, we apologise to each other in front of the kids so they can see how conflict resolution actually happens.”

Despite their current methods, Bell also recalled how they initially aimed for a laid-back parenting style. She told TODAY that their intention was to parent like they would with a second child – with less overprotection. “We made an agreement that if she wanted to do something, as long as it didn’t require a trip to the hospital, she’d be allowed to do it,” she said. The couple’s parenting choices continue to reflect a mix of realism, personal values and a desire to foster open communication.
