Danielle Fishel has admitted she’s “always been very hard” on herself but is now learning to feel more pride in her achievements. The 44-year-old actress, best known for her role as Topanga Lawrence in Boy Meets World, shared that self-criticism has long been her default mindset. She told Extra that she’s “actively working on” being proud of her progress, explaining that while her perfectionism has driven her success, it often leaves her unable to celebrate her own accomplishments.

The American star, who is currently competing on Dancing with the Stars, said the experience has been “a real gift”. Determined to finish the show with a sense of pride, Danielle revealed her main goal is to “give [herself] grace” and acknowledge how far she’s come. “When I do something well, my next thought is, ‘What’s the next thing I have to do?’” she confessed, adding that the competition has helped her practise self-appreciation.
Danielle was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024, an experience that reshaped her outlook on life. After completing treatment, she felt compelled to pursue opportunities that brought her genuine happiness. Speaking to People, she reflected: “If this has shown me anything, it’s that I wasn’t experiencing enough joy in my life.” The illness, she said, prompted her to prioritise fun and balance over constant productivity.

Accepting the invitation to appear on Dancing with the Stars, she explained, felt like “the perfect way to cap it off” — a chance to dance, celebrate resilience, and rediscover the pleasure of simply having fun.
