Conan O’Brien reveals surprising restrictions on Oscars statuette

Date:

Conan O’Brien has revealed two peculiar restrictions concerning the famous Oscars statuette. Speaking on his podcast Conan Needs A Friend, the presenter shared that he had several ideas for promotional videos ahead of hosting the 2025 Academy Awards earlier this month. However, two of his concepts were swiftly rejected due to strict guidelines governing the Oscars’ iconic golden figure.

One of O’Brien’s ideas involved portraying himself and a 9-foot-tall Oscar statuette as a domestic couple. He imagined the scene with the statuette lounging on a large sofa while he vacuumed, asking it to help with household chores. “We wanted to do it, but they just said, ‘No, no, no, that can’t happen,'” O’Brien explained. He was informed by an Academy representative that the statuette could never be presented horizontally, which he described as “mind-blowing,” likening the rule to the reverence of religious icons.

Another suggestion involved dressing the Oscar in an apron, turning it into a housewife figure. However, the Academy firmly rejected this idea as well, stating, “No clothing on Oscar.” The strictness of these guidelines has sparked amusement, with O’Brien commenting on how surprising and rigid the rules seemed.

The 2025 Academy Awards saw notable winners, including Mikey Madison, who took home the Oscar for Best Actress, and Adrien Brody, who won Best Actor. Kieran Culkin was honoured with Best Supporting Actor, and Zoe Saldaña won Best Supporting Actress. Best Picture went to Anora. Brody’s acceptance speech also made history, becoming the longest in Oscars history at five minutes and 40 seconds.
