Christmas films on Netflix: finding festive favourites with secret codes

Date:

Netflix has steadily become as closely associated with Christmas films as the Hallmark Channel, and the platform has now made it even easier for subscribers to avoid scrolling endlessly to find the exact festive title they want. The 2025 line-up brings another strong selection of Christmas releases across November and December, including a romcom starring Alicia Silverstone, the comedy Jingle Bell Heist with Connor Swindells, and a French-themed romance titled Champagne Problems. Viewers can also revisit classic franchises, such as The Princess Switch series, or family favourites like Jingle Jangle, for a comforting festive rewatch.

As the holiday season approaches, some viewers may be searching for a very specific style of Christmas film or series, while others might simply want something light-hearted to help children get into the festive spirit. Fortunately, Netflix has created a quicker way for users to locate exactly what they’re after through its long-established system of “secret codes”. These codes allow subscribers to pull up curated playlists of films and shows that match a particular theme or sub-genre, making the process of browsing much more efficient.

Using the secret codes is straightforward. Users can type a specific code into the streamer’s website, press enter, and be taken straight to the relevant category. According to What’s On Netflix, accessing these codes through the search bar on a television or mobile device has become more difficult, meaning viewers will now need to type in the category name instead. In the UK, several codes still work for those seeking a particular type of Christmas film—whether a Netflix original or a title from its wider catalogue.

For the festive period, Netflix has created categories for romantic Christmas films, family-friendly titles, and even TV programmes that appeal to both children and adults. Although the number of secret codes has been reduced in recent years, several remain available in 2024. Netflix has also quietly built a shared “Christmas universe”, where original festive films and series reference one another. Characters in one film may watch another Netflix Christmas title, or the stories may share fictional settings. For example, the leads of A Christmas Prince appear in The Princess Switch films, while The Knight Before Christmas nods to Aldovia, and the 2024 release Hot Frosty even features a playful reference to Lindsay Lohan’s 2022 film Falling for Christmas.
