Queen Camilla has expressed her hope that the “devastating and brutal” war in Ukraine can be resolved through a shared determination to stand up to tyranny. Speaking ahead of an awards dinner for The Rifles at the Guildhall in the City of London, Her Majesty reflected on the importance of pursuing peace with the same commitment shown on the battlefield. Wearing a red velvet evening gown by Fiona Clare, the Queen addressed guests in her role as Colonel-in-Chief of the regiment.

In her remarks, Camilla paid tribute to The Rifles’ antecedents, recalling their role in the Crimean War and drawing parallels with today’s conflict in Ukraine. She noted that veterans she had met during recent Second World War commemorations had spoken with “a clear and unanimous plea” for peace to be sought with unwavering determination. The Queen said it was fitting to reflect on the regiment’s historical connections to the region, expressing hope that resolve could again bring about a peaceful outcome.
The Queen also offered thanks to her equerry, Major Ollie Plunket, who is soon to be succeeded by Major Rob Treasure. She praised Major Plunket for his dedication over the past three years, saying that he had “excelled in everything he has done”. The awards dinner was attended by the regiment’s Royal Colonels, including the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and the Duchess of Edinburgh.

Queen Camilla became Colonel-in-Chief of The Rifles in 2020, succeeding the late Prince Philip. She also has a personal connection to the regiment through her late father, Major Bruce Shand, who served with the Desert Rats. Two of The Rifles’ battalions remain part of the famed 7th Infantry Brigade, underlining the long-standing links between the regiment and the Royal Family.
